Dateless Losers

We’ve all known a few dateless losers. Maybe it was back in high school with the socially awkward nerd who always tried too hard to get a date and you knew would probably die lonely. Or maybe after college, one of your girlfriends or sorority sisters had given up on men and decided she would rather die lonely than risk being hurt again, so she turns to the love of another woman to avoid being lonely any longer. Or maybe the dateless loser you know is a 40-something business man who is too wrapped up in his career to go on dates, and you wonder why he isn’t lonely when the only to keep him company is his work. Or maybe your grandfather just died and you wonder why your widow grandmother is such a dateless looser, just being alone instead of going out on dates again.
Whatever the reason why these people are dateless losers, those of us that have dates always seem to feel sorry for them or pity them. But with the exception of Screech Powers from Saved by the Bell in the first example, the rest of the dateless losers that are going to die lonely are doing so out of choice. So why we pity these dateless losers so much is a mystery. Even the awkward nerd could go on to invent something that makes him millions and he won’t be a dateless loser for long as the women his age change focus from cars and popularity to cars and money.
But yet we still pity the dateless losers, and in fact, they often end up pitying themselves as a result. Take the song Dateless Loser by Reel Big Fish. Reel Big Fish is an American Ska Punk Bank started in 1992. Their hit-song Dateless Loser appears on track 9 of their fourth full-length release album titled Cheer Up!
“Dateless Loser”
We are all on our own with no one by our side
You are so lucky, beautiful and bright
All the cool kids go steady they’re making out at 12-
we sit in our rooms alone
by ourselves it’s Friday- no phone call, nobody asked us out
We are the dateless losers- lonely until we die!
So unappreciated, why, why, why, why?
We’re not so bad you know, but you won’t give us a chance
Take us to the movies, to dinner, or to dance
Not perfect, not too hip- but we need lovin’ too
We are the dateless losers- lonely until we die!
So unappreciated why, why, why, why
